Post and Rail Fencing

A cleft chestnut post and rail fence is a great addition to any country garden. Chestnut is traditionally used for post and rail fencing because the natural tannins in the timber act as an excellent preservative. A chestnut post set in a hole and backfilled with limestone chippings should last 20-25 years. It is also worth noting that creosoted or tanalised wood is now treated as hazardous waste and needs to be  taken to specialised disposal centers. Using chemical free natural materials that out last the modern replacements and look timeless is a great option to consider. Of course if you would prefer a tanalised post and rail fence then I can do that too.
